David - Denny - Denshee - Dundee - Dagpie

David is a beautiful male Peking duck. He has difficulty walking because of an injury to both legs, but he loves to swim. He was rescued from a local animal shelter where he was due to be euthanized. He was filthy dirty when he arrived. He was put in a special pen for older ducks and ducks with disabilities. The first thing David did was head for the water dish. The second thing he did was fall in love through the fence with a beautiful female rouen (they look like large wild mallards) named Denshee. Denshee had arrived at the refuge with a male Cayuga duck named Dundee all the way from a shelter in Utah that had no duck facilities. Denshee was uncomfortable with all the other male ducks, so she joined David inside the pen that he was in.

A very critical necessity in successfully caring for ducks is having water available at all times for them. Many people who purchase tiny ducklings at Easter don't think beyond the cute fuzziness to understand that this little duckling is going to grow into a big duck. Ducks need water to swim and drink, a nice area where they can catch bugs and eat grass and grit, and have 24 hour protection from predators. Most people can't offer this or don't want to and the poor ducks are then abandoned on lakes where most are killed by predators.

Domestic ducks cannot fly so they are pretty much stuck where they are dumped. Denny Duck was abandoned just like this. He was rescued from a very small frozen pond. It is a miracle he survived. He fell in love at the refuge too and now he and his girlfriend Dagpie (she is black and white) are inseparable.
